Tallinn is the capital of Estonia. This small port city located on the Baltic Sea is full of monuments from various epochs: churches of different denominations, guild houses and elegant palaces. The old town has preserved its historic atmosphere, not only because of the Gothic town hall and medieval tenement houses, but also well-preserved fortifications from the 13th and 14th centuries. Therefore the Old Town is surrounded by city walls with well-preserved gates and towers, which are topped with distinctive, red roofs. The best known towers have traditional names referring to their appearance: Fat Margaret and Tall Hermann.
