Bamberg is a German city located in Bavaria on the river Regnitz. The city boasts the 14th-century Altes Rathaus, i.e. the Old City Hall, built on an artificial island in the middle of the river. This unique location of the building is a testament to the dispute between ecclesiastical and secular authorities – the bishop did not permit to erect a town hall on the urban area subordinate to him. The so-called Captain’s House is particularly noteworthy, it is a half-timbered building literally hovering over the water. It was built in 1688.
