While sailing through the Canal Grande in Venice we may admire the majestic 17th-century Basilica of Santa Maria della Salute. It is a minor basilica – such a title temples receive from the pope due to their pastoral and historic significance. The building was erected after the plague, which put to death one third of the city’s residents. The temple was built to thank for the deliverance from the plague. The basilica was designed in the baroque style, it is surrounded by six chapels and crowned with a monumental dome. The main façade of the temple is richly decorated by the statues of the four evangelists. The temple’s interior is decorated by precious paintings of Titian and Tintoretto.
